Membership

“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.  Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another – and all the more as you see the day approaching.”   Hebrews 10:24-25

STANDARDS OF MEMBERSHIP

  • Evidence of a genuine experience of regeneration, being born again (John 1:12,13; 1 Peter 1:18-23).
  • Evidence of a consistent Christian life (Romans 6:4; 13:13,14; Ephesians 4:17-   32;5:1,2,14; and John 1:6,7).
  • Baptism in water by immersion (Matthew 28:19-20; Romans 6:3-12).
  • Filled or earnestly seeking the Baptism of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues (Acts 2:4; Luke 24:49).
  • Assuming stewardship responsibilities by attendance, by service, and by willingness to contribute regularly financially to the support of the church as God prospers (Proverbs 3:9; 1 Corinthians 5:2; Hebrews 10:25).
  • Full subscription to the statement of Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God.

Some of these standards of membership may warrant some further explanation.

  • Evidence of a consistent Christian life – We recognize that sanctification is a process, and yet believe that when a person proclaims Christ as Lord the fruit of the Holy Spirit should begin to show forth, if only in “bud” form at first.
  • Filled or earnestly seeking the Baptism of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues – The Baptism of the Holy Spirit is a gift from God.  While we cannot control who receives the gift we believe every Christian who has not received it should be seeking the Baptism.
  • Assuming stewardship responsibilities by attendance, by service, and by willingness to contribute regularly financially to the support of the church as God prospers. – As a member, it is expected that a person will support the church financially. At Mount Hope we teach the principle of the tithe and have the conviction that tithing is God’s financial plan. A tithe is 10 % of our income.

Each member should understand that the same standard for becoming a member must be the standard for maintaining church membership.  Membership is more than a certificate or card.  It is a treasured fellowship with believers of like precious faith. It is a mutual sharing of joyous privileges and responsibilities with other believers.
